Our lovely dinning hall had been reinvigorated thanks to the new tables funded by Solenn, Maria, Charly, Pierre and their friends. Good for dinning, good for playing in and pretty good for studying in too. The Leopard group, who use the dinning hall as their study base, are extremely pleased. Actually everybody wants to hang …
Every 45 minutes we take a 15 minute break from our classes. I had read about schools in Finland doing this (and we all know that Finish schools do most things pretty well) so I though that we should give it a try here at Olng’arua. When children have been sitting in class it gives …
We started the new term at Olng’arua with the excitement of our new kitchen. Truly it is wonderful. It has 3 sinks with taps and actual running water, it has a fuel efficient stove, it has space and it is weather proof. It is all round so amazing that there has been a fairly non …
Sadly no one at Olng’arua School is a stranger to the sound of gunfire. Little over a year ago most were, but not now. In May 2015, after years of being the peaceful corner of Isiolo County, a low level but persistent conflict between different pastoralist groups broke out. The school found itself positioned on …
The Leopards decided to tackle a jigsaw puzzle of the world (thank you Jonny and Laura). Finding out where each country went was fun and not too difficult. All that blue ocean was another matter! However, with the help of Maria they got it sorted out.

Charly has come back to visit us at Olng’arua School and football training has already begun. He brought with him several new friends (watch this space for more news about them) and some training shirts for football practice. He is fantastic with the kids and has a great energy and commitment to their football training …
We are very excited to be building a new kitchen with the help of the Primrose Trust. Our old kitchen was a big improvement on the tree that we started cooking under, and it has served us well, but we have wanted and needed some more serious kitchen facilities for years. Good food is such …
Science, espcially at primary level, has to be a practical subject or it quickly becomes meaningless. Thinking of simple, hands-on, ways to help children discover the wonder of science is great fun. Today we explored the different physical states of water and, before it all escaped as a gas, made a pot of tea. The …
Every afternoon, before we attend the closing meeting, the children spend half an hour doing jobs around the school. They sweep and tidy their classrooms and help put away materials used during the day. The older children also help with other jobs such as watering the fruit trees and cleaning the toilets. Today the children’s committee …
