When times are hard, when drought has taken almost everything people have, lunch becomes an especially happy time in the school day.

Washing hands during the drought
With very limited water supplies (all brought into the school each day in 20lt cans) washing hands before lunch is closely monitored by the older children and the grey water saved for other uses.

Lunch is a serious business for the little children
With hands washed the kids wait in front of the kitchen for the food to be served. The younger children are sometimes a bit serious because they find it harder to deal with hunger than the older ones. The older kids muck about smiling and telling jokes. They know that food is only minutes away.

Lunch today is rice, beans and carrots, with a side of cabbage cooked with a little fried onion and tomato.
